The documents behind the claims.

Most of what is written on this site can be checked. This page is where the checking material lives: the published study, the standards, the patent, and the technical pack you need to write a specification.

The study we keep citing.

Pasolini, Toppan, Toppan, Bandiera, Mirabella, Zabini, Bonata, Andrisano — “Comprehensive Assessment of Context-Adaptive Street Lighting: Technical Aspects, Economic Insights, and Measurements from Large-Scale, Long-Term Implementations”, Sensors 24(18):5942, September 2024.

Affiliations: University of Bologna (DEI), CNIT WiLab, Wi4B, AstroLight Studio. Wi4B researchers are among the authors; the conflict of interest is declared in the paper, and the article is open access, so you can read the method rather than take our word for it.

What is in it
01Field measurements from three installations, six to sixteen months each
02The baseline stated explicitly: the same LEDs on an astronomical clock
03A comparison of adaptive operation, virtual-midnight profiles and motion sensing on real traffic
04The economics, and where the payback actually comes from
Patent

Patented in Italy — IT 102021000031628.
European and US patents pending. The patent covers the formula that turns measured traffic into an allowed lighting class.

Standards

Adaptive lighting is regulated. That is good news.

There is a written way to reduce a lighting class and a written way to prove it. A system that follows it can be specified, inspected and defended — which matters more than a percentage on a slide.

UNI 11248

The Italian standard that defines traffic-adaptive (TAI) and full-adaptive (FAI) installations and what each may reduce.

EN 13201-2 / -4

The performance requirements for the road classes, and how the installation is verified once built.

CEN/TR 13201-1

The selection of classes — currently being revised with a section on adaptive lighting.

Green procurement

Italian minimum environmental criteria reward systems that react to changing conditions within a minute.
